Movie Night at MacEwan: Tracing the Columbia and Best of Aquabatics Film Festival
Grant MacEwan University - BioDiversity Class will be hosting the Edmonton Premiers of "Tracing the Columbia: the story of the 2011 David Thompson Columbia Brigade", and the "Best of the 2011 Aquabatics Whitewater Film Festival."

This is a fundraising project of a group of MacEwan students who are off to Ecuador in May to study ecosystems from the tropical rainforest to the high Andes. There will be a small door charge ($2), a concession and an opportunity to purchase copies of the Tracing the Columbia video.

These video screenings will take place Thursday, January 19th, 2012. Doors open at 7:00 PM, screening will commence sharp 7:30 PM in the CN Theatre, room 5-42 (this theatre faces onto 105 Street, and is central to building 5) at Grant MacEwan University.

Tracing the Columbia tells the six week story of a group of 150 paddlers following the 1811 route by which David Thompson (the world's greatest land cartographer) travelled from his fur trade post at Invermere, B.C, to the mouth of the mighty Columbia River at Astoria. This route starts up the Columbia, across to, and down the Kootenay River, across to the Clark Fork and Pend Orielle Rivers, back to the Columbia at Kettle Falls, and then onto Astoria at the Pacific Ocean. This video was very well received at the world premier to the participants and families at Abbotsford, B.C. in November.

Best of the 2011 Aquabatics Whitewater Film Festival. Each of the last three years, Calgary's leading whitewater retailer has hosted a film festival of locally produced whitewater videos. The Bow Valley is home to both some exceptional kayakers and vidographers. This film festival is rapidly developing a reputation for superb "shorts".

The MacEwan Biodiversity Class and myself look forward to seeing a large proportion of Edmonton's Paddling community out for this event! January 19th may be the coldest night of the year, but we can enjoy an evening of great paddling, fantastic scenery and dream of summer!

ASCK Annual General Meeting – October 15th
There was a good turnout of people from the slalom racing community at the ASCK Annual General Meeting on October 15th followed by a potluck dinner in the Bow Waters Canoe Clubhouse in Calgary. We talked about the activities from last year, the successes of the High Performance racing team from Alberta, the out-of-province trips to Australia, North Carolina, Chilliwack, Wisconsin, Colorado, and finally Chilliwack for Nationals. There was a good discussion of how to get more kids involved. We talked about the plans for 2012 and how the Olympics in London would affect our programs here next summer. Finally we also talked about how the changes in the National funding program may affect Alberta’s slalom if the Regional Development Centre concept is abandoned for a centralized National Team program in Ottawa.

Election of Officers
Lynn Jobe moved up from her position as Vice President to become the new ASCK President and Karen Hirl moved over to fill the Vice President position. New to the Board this year is Nathan Muir from the Sundre Paddling Club who volunteered as a Director at Large. And continuing on for another term is Connor Curson as Secretary, Dan Groeneveld as Treasurer and Greg Hunter as Director at Large. Adrian Cole decided not to run again for Athlete Representative and we are looking for one of our +18 athletes to fill this position. Joanne Cole stepped down after 4 years on the Board, the last 2 years as President. Joanne’s contributions in steering the organization through this growth period were invaluable. Her strong leadership and getting things done approach was of great value to the organization as ASCK solidified Calgary’s role as a National Whitewater Training Centre.

The Board of Directors wishes to thank Joanne Cole and Adrian Cole for their time and dedication as volunteers on the ASCK Board.

A special thank you to Waterwerks for donating one of their meeting room days at the BWCC facility to ASCK for the meeting and dinner. It was a fabulous place to get together and work through our day, overlooking the WID canal where so many people have been taught to paddle.

Slave River Paddlefest, July 29-Aug 1, 2011
Preparations are well underway for the 4th annual Slave River Paddlefest. The main festival weekend is July 29 – August 1, but we have river trips, clinics and a big air surf competition in the weeks leading up to Paddlefest, and many paddlers arrive early. The water’s warm, the days are long - come on up and stay awhile! Check out this link for more details, more photos, or to register online. We’re asking folks to register before July 15 so we’ll know how many steaks to order. http://fskayak.webs.com/slaveriverpaddlefest.htm

The Slave River, near Fort Smith NWT, is an awesome river for all ages and skill levels - from expert paddlers to brand-new beginners, and our festival has clinics and events for everyone. Paddlefest includes instructional clinics, river trips, and fun, friendly competitions. There are events for kayaks, canoes, voyageur canoes, kids and adults. Rafts are always welcome! The Slave offers every type of paddling imaginable: from flatwater canoeing around beautiful islands to wild Class V and VI whitewater.

New this year, the "Edge King Throwdown" Big Air Competition is going to be July 26-27 - about 3-4 days before Paddlefest starts so we can go out onto the river and not have to worry about spectators. This will be an event by boaters for boaters. The feature we use for the competition will be based on the water levels that week/ day. This could be any number of places. The Edge, Sweet Spot, Rollercoaster, Rockem Sockem (not likely unless the water is uber low), Monster Schizer, Outrageous, No 1,2,3 wave, or something crazy like Pelican (if we ever figure out how to catch it consistently). There's $1000 in prize money split by the top three, and a crown with the words "Edge King," going to the top spot. For complete rules, check out this link: http://fskayak.webs.com/bigaircompetition.htm

Friday, July 29 is our voyageur canoe race and flatwater flotilla. This is a 45 km flatwater paddle (or you can start halfway this year) along the old fur-trade route that ends up in the Aboriginal community of Fort Fitzgerald. The paddlers will be welcomed in Fitz with a big community feast, where we will learn some traditional Dene Games, and watch a Handgames tournament in progress. Our club will likely have a war canoe in the race again, and there will be canoes available to borrow too if you want to paddle flatwater for the day (or bring your sea kayak).

Saturday is our main spectator day, with fun, friendly whitewater competitions at Mountain Portage rapids, including a World Kayak Throwdown. We have events for whitewater canoes too, such as the popular “canoe surfing and rescue” team event. Sunday includes downriver races for beginner, intermediate and advanced paddlers, and more fun competitions. Sunday night is our awards supper, and Monday morning is a pancake breakfast.

Paddlefest includes lots of activities for spectators too, so bring the family – they can watch the whitewater events, join our community feast, learn Dene traditional games, try paddling, or go on a guided hike to learn more about the local area.

Hope to see you on the Slave this summer!

Transport Canada News
Congratulations Paddlers! Because of your involvement in writing and talking to your Member of Parliament, the Minister of Transport, Chuck Strahl, announced on Thursday, March 17 that Transport Canada would not require any canoes or kayaks or other small hand powered vessels to be registered. Originally an interpretation of the legislation, led government officials to begin requiring any person leading a trip in a canoe or kayak to register their boat(s) as a commercial vessel. Our complaints and action have alerted our elected officials to this problem and the Government of Canada listened and changed the rules so that all small human powered boats are exempted from being commercially classified.

This ruling applies to all non-profit groups like kayak clubs, boy scouts, summer camps and to kayak schools and commercial outfitters that are run by a for-profit company.

There are other rules that still apply and these have not been changed. See below for further details.

We need to fill our casino volunteer positions for our casino. As you know all HP and Winter Training families are responsible for taking a minimum of 2 casino shifts each year. But we also need help from our regular slalom community too. This casino is vitally important to providing coaching and support to our slalom team. Without our casino funds we would not be able to offer the excellent program that it has become. ASCK will treat all casino volunteers to meal vouchers at the casino and for out-of-town volunteers, ASCK will pay the normal volunteer mileage rate of $0.26/km to the casino and home and a hotel room if required. If you would like to volunteer for a position I will need to know the day(s) and the time(s) that you are available and the type of position that you would like to work in.

Paul Kane 1847 Christmas (benefit) Dinner
On behalf of the Edmonton Paddling Centres Association let me thank everyone who helped to make our first Paul Kane 1847 Christmas (benefit) Dinner such a smashing success.  When Co-Chair Karina and I took this project on we thought we might have a nice supper for a few dozen friends in the Clerk's Quarters and try to make a few hundred dollars for the paddling centre and learn something about such projects. Pre-Provincials Whitewater/Slalom camp
The Saskatoon Whitewater Kayak Club will be hosting a Pre-Provincials Whitewater/Slalom camp at the Kananaskis from Wednesday, Sept 1 - Friday Sept 3 and throughout the Provincials weekend. Because of the short notice of this camp there will be a coaching fee of $200 and participants will be required to supply their own accomodation and food. The coaching fee will cover coaching during the camp as well as for the Provincials weekend unless you wish to be coached by your regular club coach during the race. It sounds like it would be extremely expensive to book Canoe Meadows for the week so if you want to camp, Bow Valley Campground may be your next best option or you may want to find a friend's house in Calgary or Canmore to stay at.
We will meet at Canoe Meadows at 9:00 Wednesday morning and will decided on groups then.
Any parents who would like to help out with cooking and shuttles would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Contact me at brendancurson@yahoo.ca or 306.979.5218 for any questions or further details.

Slave River Paddlefest
Check out these videos from the 2009 Slave River Paddlefest. This event is a positive protest against the proposed Slave River hydro dam to showcase the Zambezi of northeastern Alberta. Warm water, big rapids and wonderful hosts make the Slave a CAN’T MISS destination. These videos are 1.5 minutes each - perfect for e-mailing - please forward them to paddlers or friends who might be interested. - Kirsten Bradley, Fort Smith, NWT

Here’s an older video, if you haven’t seen Jacqui’s video from last year's Paddlefest, please check it out as well. She included more information about the proposed dam. It’s excellent, but a little longer – around 17 minutes: http://vimeo.com/6712338
