courseAWA/CKC - NCCP Level 1 Kayak Instructor for Pool and Lake

date/time:  Friday, May 10, 5:30 to 10:00 PM; Saturday, May11, 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and
Sunday, May 12, 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

location:  Edmonton, Grant MacEwan University, Sport & Wellness Centre, Hermitage ponds and possibly other locations... transport during the day is important but car pooling should be possible.

host:    United Alberta Paddling Society (UAPS)

prerequisite:  intermediate flatwater paddling skills with good kayak control, completed or nearly
completed roll to one side

fees:  tentatively, depends on numbers and final pool cost: maximum course fee $210 + registry fee $120 = $330 (based on 6 participants)  A   $250 deposit is required to hold a “seat”.  Please make cheques payable to the UAPS: and these may be sent to, or dropped off at, 5404 – 114 A Street, Edmonton, AB T6H 3M7, or delivered to Eric or Mark Lund.

learning facilitators:  Mark Lund(MLF), and Eric Lund (LF)

kayaks & paddling gear:  available from MacEwan and UAPS, or you are welcome to provide your own – please insure your own kayaks and gear are VERY CLEAN for the pool sessions.

course materials:  will be provided in advance electronically, participants may optionally print their materials or bring to classes on a laptop.  Assignments given in advance must be completed prior to course commencement.

recertification options:   present, or recently expired paddling instructors who wish to recertify must now complete some of the common NCCP theory modules in addition to a teaching and paddling re-evaluation.  We are prepared to take a small number of such candidates and would expect them to attend selected Friday evening and   Saturday sessions for the theory… and then paddling and instructional evaluations will be required.  Reregistration will be $120 + a course fee of $60 = $180

deadlines & maximums:  insufficient enrollment (deposits received) deadline will be 6:00 PM, Wednesday May1st, minimum enrollment is 6, and maximum is 8, up to 4 recertification candidates in addition.

Course Schedule – CKC Level 1

Friday

5:30 PM – 7:45 PM in Grant MacEwan (rmTBA) this is one of the classrooms upstairs in the phys ed building, I'll try and leave a kayak sticking out of the door or some other equally obvious sign of where we are

·        Intro' to the CKC Program (25 min)

·        Intro' to the NCCP Program (15 min incl'd video “Thanks Coach”)

·        Equipment Review – (Individual Presentations as Assigned.. 5-8 min each = 50 min)

·        Risk Management/Liability – (30 min)

8: 30 PM – 10:00 PM in the MacEwan Pool. Some boats are available to us, you're welcome to bring your own boat, just make sure it is really really really clean. We'll be trying to get through some of the upside down stuff this evening in the pool. Bring a noseplug and goggles if you find that to be more comfortable.

·        entry/exit review

·        stroke review and progression - to be based on Boat-Blade-Body framework from manual, pg. 143, through pg 150

Saturday

10:00 AM – 2:00 PM on the water at Hermitage pond. Lots going on here today, bring a bag lunch, fluids, all the stuff you'll need for a day on the water.

·        Complete stroke reviews

·        Leading lake tours / EAPs

·        Peer teaching/mini lessons... as assigned

* 3:00 PM to 4:45 PM – back at MacEwan in the classroom

·        Teaching & Learning

·        Making Ethical Decisions

* 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM back in the MacEwan Pool.

·        Roll review and progression

·        Flat water rescues

·        stroke review for recert candidates

Sunday

* 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM – at Hermitage Pond

·        Student lessons

·        Debrief

total = 16+ hrs

* required sessions for those recertifying
