Hello ,

Let's Go!

This weekend is the season kickoff for whitewater festival in Pincher Creek. If you haven't signed up yet, there's still time...

From there we're into spring paddling around the Province with potentially a shortened runoff season due to snowpack, but we'll see what June's rains bring.

The Prize results of the April Membership Drive are up now. Thanks to everyone who pushed to get their membership in. We were over 1000 members before May 1! Thank you to AQ Outdoors, Kelsey's Caravan, YipYak, Kootenay PDL, River City Repair, & Chinook Rafting for providing prizes!

If you like prizes, make sure you do the new Free Online River Safety Course, and go to the Certificate page to enter for a chance to win a Kootenay PDL Stand up Paddle Board!

Summer Jobs

Want the best summer job you can get? Consider coaching for one of the clubs, or directly with AWA. There are positions open yearly in:

Pincher Creek, Lethbridge, Calgary, Canmore, Rocky Mountain-House, Sundre/Innisfail, Edmonton, Grande Prairie, and Fort Smith. Some positions come with accommodations and other perks, so consider a new experience.

AWA applies for more than a dozen Canada Summer Jobs grants for our clubs each year. If you're between 15-30, the clubs get a $15/hr grant. The clubs choose their candidates and do direct supervision, while AWA does the payroll and other admin. Win-Win.

Wapiti Whitewater Kayakers in Grande Prairie are already seeking a qualified candidate to support their programs in 2025. See the posting below.

Bow Valley Kayak Club is looking for leaders and instructors in Canmore.

AWA needs two people to support the PFD lending station at Harvie Passage. Work on your tan, and lend out free PFDs all summer.

Early Spring Wrap Up

Whitewater Leadership Symposium

Our 4th Annual Symposium saw 49 participants in kayaks and on SUPs. We even had 2 our of 3 days of fantastic weather. Much learning, sharing, and socializing made for an awesome weekend. We created 9 new instructors and helped a whole bunch more improve their paddling, rescue, and teaching skills. Much appreciation to our leaders who take the time out of their busy spring season to help out so many people!

Casino Thank you!

Huge shout out to our Casino volunteers. We really appreciate the time you set aside on a weekend to help the AWA. We're excited for what the next year or two will bring with this valuable funding.

National Slalom Team Trials

A team of 14 athletes plus support staff and parents attended the event in Chilliwack, BC. Trevor Boyd from Calgary secured his spot on the Senior National Team and will be competing in Europe and Australia this summer and fall. The high water was a great learning experience for the kids and we expect that the Kan will feel like flatwater now!

For a full recap of the event and other slalom news check out the AWS NEWSLETTER that came out this week.

Penguin Race

Waterwerks held its 17th Annual Penguin Race at the Western Irrigation Canal. This race is a staple for local kids and adults to dust off the cobwebs and make sure they haven't outgrown all their gear over the winter (bad news, the kids did outgrow their gear). Thanks to the volunteers who put together fun prizes and meals for all!

Freestyle News

Alberta has three freestyle athletes going to the World Championships in Germany, in June. Rookie Jordy Munro will be mentored by veterans Darrell Wiebe and Scott Feindel who will be looking to transfer their mastery of the Kan to the Platling Wave. We'll be sure to share the live stream link when we find it. Who's next?

Alberta Playboaters League programs are up and running. With weekly training at the Kan and a couple of weekend training days at the Brierlies and S-Bend scheduled.

New! Online River Safety Course

Win a SUP by finishing the course and going to the Certificate Page to enter.

We are excited to share the result of 2 years of work from a great team of people. The Online River Safety Course is for everyone. From tubers, to beginner paddlers, to experienced paddlers taking friends out. You'll find tips and tricks for staying safe on the water, maneuvering around, and respecting the river. Helps us spread the word.

Celebrating National AccessAbility Week  -  Opportunities and Possibilities

Inclusion isn’t a checklist; it’s a culture. And it’s one that the AWA is committed to growing, together, with you.

May 26–June 1 is National AccessAbility Week. This is a great  reminder to explore the opportunities and possibilities in our own clubs and programs and within the greater paddling community as a whole.

The National Accessibility Week theme for 2025 is “Forward Together: Accessibility and Inclusion for All”. This serves to remind us that meaningful change happens when we collaborate and when we explore the opportunities and possibilities together. Big thanks to the volunteers, clubs, and paddlers helping to build a paddling community where everyone feels welcome, seen, and supported.

PaddleAll, together.
