Hello ,

That is probably the end of the outdoor season for all but the most hardy paddlers. As we transition to winter sports, the pool and the gym, there's still lots happening in our paddling world!

We have an exciting new Learn-to-Train program with webinars and mini-camps to help youth transition into being an 'Athlete' in all our disciplines. Polo tournaments fire up this weekend for the winter. AQ's River Reels film comp is coming up in a couple of weeks, which is always a great way to look back on the season.

There's always something to do year-round to help you progress and prepare for your next adventure!

Paddle in the Pool this Winter

When the water freezes, paddlers across Alberta head indoors! Pool sessions are starting up across the province, offering a warm, social, and safe space to stay active and connected through the winter.

Explore sessions beyond your home club as each one offers something a little different. Some focus on freestyle or canoe polo, others on beginner or family programs, and many enjoy the post-session social time!

Remember, your AWA membership covers you for the entire year, so you only pay it once, even if you join multiple clubs. It’s an easy and affordable way to support volunteers, help cover pool and equipment costs, and experience the diversity of paddling in Alberta. For less than the cost of a night at the movies, you can get on the water, meet new paddlers, and learn from others who bring unique styles and tips to share.

Pool sessions are also a great way to introduce new paddlers or build skills before spring returns. If your club wants to offer structured programs or host an NCCP Pool Kayak Instructor course, the AWA can help with resources, clinicians, and guidance.

KanFest 2026 Update

The KanFest committee is super excited to pilot a July event in 2026!

As everyone knows, over the last few years the community has had trouble with water guarantees on the Kananaskis. 2025 had us all on the edge of our seat right up until the event, not knowing if there would be water for KanFest. The best we could hope for was 4hrs per day, which had been drafted into an agreement by the GOA and TransAlta. Luckily we had a rainy July and TransAlta was able to run the 4hrs requested, as well as extra water due to precipitation. In any case the water stress was real.

For 2026 we have optimism that we'll have simlar consistent summer flows on the Kan, but what we've heard from TransAlta and the GOA is that August is challenging from a water security/power perspective. Natural flows are very low in August, and they are trying to refill the system for fall and winter water security for the basin.

With that in mind, and some of the other events on the schedule, we have settled on July 10-12, 2026. This will bring a cool opportunity for KanFest particularly for out-of-town participants to come to the Kan/Calgary and experience the Calgary Stampede at the same time.

So get yer hats and boots ready and expect a serious Kayak Rodeo next year!

Branching Out: My Second Season on the Water

My first whitewater season had simple goals: learn, have fun, and try not to die. I even found a journal page where I’d scribbled a few loose goals for my second season, but I wasn’t sure what it would hold.

UAPS’ Beginner Development Program (BDP) was pure magic for me in 2024. Wanting to contribute more, I joined the UAPS exec team to help make it happen. BDP runs on the energy of many hands, and with incredible support from Shelagh, the exec team, and 30+ volunteers, we brought this program to life. We had an awesome season with 21 participants, and now I’m already deep in planning for 2026.

In my quest to keep learning, 2025 was full of training: Wilderness First Aid, Swiftwater Rescue, Pool and Lake Kayak Instructor, and River Leader 2. None would have been possible without support from inMotion, UAPS, and AWA. I added pool playboating, stroke improvement, and polo courses, plus helped with pool and outdoor sessions, including our women-only intro class. Seeing a student light up when something clicks is pure joy.

This year, I learned to embrace the adventure zone – that mix of challenge and wonder that pushes growth. With new rivers, my first class III features, festivals, and new roles, little felt comfortable, but all of it was rewarding. I found a braver part of myself that says, “do hard things on purpose,” and another that knows true leadership comes from being authentic, on and off the water.

Big smiles,

Mo

Ghost Reservoir Infrastructure Project (GRIP)

The Province is moving forward with Phase 3 of the $1.6B GRIP Project to move the Ghost Dam downstream roughly 2km. This would remove one of the best beginner whitewater sections in the Calgary region.

AWA's position is that when this project reaches a conclusion, there should be compensation for the lost recreational area. The main compensation should include:

  • A whitewater park - as was previously included in the Old Man Dam project
    • this could be immediately below the dam
    • it could be nearby, like around Wildcat
    • or it could be a whitewater park in Cochrane
  • Public Access below the dam
  • A Portage trail

It will likely be a decade till this project reaches a conclusion, but we should all be sowing the seeds now.
