Season Kickoff!

The past two weekends really captured what paddling in Alberta looks like; unpredictable conditions, committed leaders, and a community that shows up regardless.

The 5th Annual Leadership Symposium in Kananaskis brought together 40 dedicated leaders, instructors, and coaches from across Alberta and BC. Despite a full range of weather, the weekend highlighted something more important, an ongoing commitment to learning, growth, and supporting one another in the roles we take on in our clubs and programs.

It was great to see leaders across the disciplines of flatwater, whitewater, kayaking, SUP, and some packrafting this year! Shared space, ideas, and experiences make paddlesport activities accessible accessible to everyone! The AWA was also happy to provide a home-cooked meal on Saturday evening as a small thank you for the many hours our volunteers give to paddlesport across the province. Our leaders truly do it all, from introducing new paddlers to the water to supporting competitions and building strong club communities.

The following weekend carried that momentum forward with more training opportunities across the province. A River Rescue course ran in Grande Prairie, alongside NCCP Pool and Lake Instructor courses in both Edmonton and Calgary, continuing to build safety, skills, and leadership capacity in our community.

At the same time, the 18th Annual Penguin Race, hosted by Waterwerks Kayak Club, brought youth and families together in Calgary for a fun, welcoming start to the season. It’s always great to see this event which is so accessible, social, and full of energy.

April was Membership Drive Month. Thank you to everyone who updated their membership, and to AQ Outdoors, KanFest, Cochrane Paddlers, River City Repair, and Canoe Meadows Campground for supporting with prizes.

3 Rivers Rendezvous

We don't want to jinx it, but this is shaping up to be one of the best 3RRs ever! The two week forecast is looking un-Albertan and the rivers are starting to rise. With a dozen waterways within an hour, there is always something for everyone.

Camping, Food, Paddling, Games, and more Food makes this the go-to event to kick off the season. Paddle within your limit and enjoy seeing all your paddling friends after the 6 winters we just endured :)

As we move within regions of the province and inter-provincial, please remember to:

  • Clean your equipment - mud and dirt can transport whirling
    • After removing mud - Clean with Quat if you are going from high risk areas to low risk areas
  • Drain you boat - sponge out and pull the drain plug
  • Dry your equipment - gear must be bone dry for at least 24hrs to have a hope of killing the nasties
