POCC Zero to Hero Developmentals Kayak Camps

The Pinch-o-Crow Creekers is offering 3  Summer Kayak Camps river this year for children ages 10 and up. Spend a week  of fun-filled, summer days on the water with other kids from 9:00 to 4:00 who are going to be having a blast on the water in a whitewater kayak.

Our camps are changing this year because of the Covid-19 situation. After consulting nationally and provincially we have created a safe operating plan that includes maximum time outdoors having fun and minimizing risks. To help us cope with this change we are requesting that a parent or older sibling accompany your child for the camp. So instead of this being a kids only camp it will be a family camp. You are welcome to bring a cohort family or children with you. Our biggest challenge is moving children between paddling locations because we cannot use just 1 shuttle van. So for this to work we need families to help shuttle their children between paddling trips. 

During the week, you will be assigned your own kit with your paddling gear for the week, you are to take this kit home everynight and air-dry it and bring it back the next day. If needed you can wash the gear with soap and water, never bleatch or harsh disinfectants. All boats and paddles will be washed each evening after our sessions. 

The camps are open to anyone 10 and over with good swimming skills. For select children younger than 10, that have been in the pool and have mastered the wet exit with a spray skirt to the satisfaction of our Head Instructor may be able to get into our camp. 

Its SAFE - BUT CHALLENGING   with our fully certified instructors. Our POCC club has trained 100's of kids to paddle, including many who went on to compete for the Alberta Provincial team across Canada and for Canada at Jr. Worlds in Australia, Slovakia, Poland, Brazil and other destinations around the world. 

Dates:  June 29 - July 3, 2020          July 20 - 24, 2020           Aug 10 -14

Cost: $245 for the 5 day week

     Includes:

-  All equipment: boats, paddles, lifejackets, helmets, wetsuits, booties, jackets

What Happens: 

We start on the lake, practicing flipping the kayaks and getting out.  Next you learn to paddle the kayak in a straight line. And we play some games along the way. Our favorite games are no-touch tag, knights and dragons and looking for turtles.

The 2nd day we move to an easy river, the Crowsnest, where you’ll learn about reading the river, eddy turns, ferries and paddling through waves.

The 3rd day we work on the fundamentals again and river safety skills before we get back on the river to build some more skills.

Day 4 we are exploring a different river running rapids and dropping some ledges.

Day 5 we finish the week on a mystery river and trying to surf some waves. 

This is a great way to engage in a fun sport with other kids and families. Each day starts at 9am and finishes at 4:30 pm with flexibility for pick up times.  Everyone needs a big lunch with lots of water, a bathing suit and towel, a change of dry clothes  and a whole lot of energy. 

This camp works on the FUNdamental and Developmental skills for kayaking. Paddles who have completed this camp will have a solid understanding of kayaking on the river and safety skills around moving water. It equips children with physical literacy skills for any type of watercraft and a lifetime of enjoyment around water. It also will educate your child about moving water and how to be safe around it.
