The best 32 young whitewater paddlers in Alberta gather every 2 years for 3 days of competition in mid July at the Alberta Summer Games. This biennial event includes a range of other sports and Canoe/Kayak is privileged to be included in the mix of sports showcasing Alberta's young athletes. This is the one competition that brings all the different types of clubs, athletes and programs together to test their skills. The competitions include a pre-games canoe polo tournament, slalom in kayaks and C-boats, and a head-to-head race. It is all held on a flatwater creek, pond or moving river and it gives everyone a good test of skill and athletic ability.
It is exciting to see how the Canoe Polo players from Grande Prairie, Edmonton and Innisfail stack up against the River Runners from Jasper, Sundre, Canmore and Lethbridge vs the Slalom specialists from Pincher Creek, Calgary and Innisfail. Throw in a few newbies and add on a Pre-ASG camp and there will be some interesting results over the weekend. The best part of the event is the intermingling between all of these young athletes sharing the sport of canoe/kayak and finding camaraderie in the competition.
Thanks to all the coaches and chaperones who come from across the province to support their zones and who provided great leadership during the event and in the Pre-ASG camp the week prior to the Games.
There are 3 events held at the Alberta Summer Games for Canoe/Kayak. The 1st day of the competition is the Slalom Race, where every competitor gets the chance to participate in the kayak (K-1), single canoe (C-1), paddling through the gates in a timed and judged event. The last day of the ASG is the Kayak Cross head-to-head race. It will be a highlight starting on the slide and racing head-to-head!

The Alberta Whitewater Association recognizes that the Alberta Summer Games is a critical pillar in identifying, recruiting and developing athletes. Many athletes get their first taste of whitewater competition at the ASG and the experience can be an important stepping stone. The AWA retains athletes after the summer games by organizing and hosting training camps and races. Some of the athletes who have participated in the ASG games have gone on to earn spots on the Canadian National Slalom and Polo Teams.
